Falkland Islands in English, Islas Malvinas Islas Malvinas in Spanish and Portuguese) are an archipelago in the South Atlantic located 480 km from the coast of Argentina and 940 km north of Antarctica. They are a British overseas territory Wed. They are claimed by Argentina and were the issue of a military confrontation, the Falklands War between the two countries in 1982.
The archipelago consists of two main islands, West Falkland and East Falkland separated by a wide channel, the Falkland Strait (Estrecho de San Carlos in Spanish), as well as more than 750 islands and islets. The area of the archipelago is 12,173 km2 (area the size of Northern Ireland), for a population of about 3000 inhabitants, two thirds of whom live in the capital Port Stanley.
The Falkland Islands and French Guiana are the only South American territories belonging to countries of the European Union.
