Although belonging physiographically in North America, Greenland has been ethnically, politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and Denmark, the colonial powers, as well as the neighboring island of Iceland ) for more than a millennium.
Greenland is the second largest island in the world after Australia. More than three quarters of its territory is covered by only contemporary ice cap outside Antarctica. With a population of 56,370 inhabitants on 1 January 2013, Greenland is the least densely populated country in the world.
