Iceland is an island nation in the North Atlantic Ocean, located between Greenland and Norway, northwest of the Faroe Islands. It lies on the mid-Atlantic ridge separating the Eurasian tectonic plate and the North American and thus has many volcanoes. Geographically closer to the American continent via Greenland, the country is culturally and historically linked to Europe. It has an area of 103,000 km2 and a population of about 320,000 inhabitants; its density is the lowest in Europe (188th in the world). Its capital and largest city is Reykjavik. The national language, Icelandic, usually spoken by almost all the inhabitants and has the official status since June 2011.
