Lebanon is a state in the Middle East, largely mountainous. It shares borders with Syria to the north and east of 376 km and Israel to the south of 79 km. It is bordered to the west by the Levantine Basin, the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, with 220 km of coastline. Beirut is the capital.
The official language is Arabic. The French having lost that status is a second language, used especially in education. The official currency is the Lebanese pound.
